When using the "Search with families" option, the gray row indicators highlight the family members on display that do not match the filter criteria.
The colored boxes in the Document List indicate the "state" that any given document is in. Hovering the mouse over any of the colored boxes will display a tool tip indicating what that color signifies.
What do the different colors mean?
The document has a Privileged-type mark |

The document has been produced |

A duplicate of the document has been produced |

The document contains redactions and/or annotations |

Emails that are "internal" to a conversation thread are denoted with a special indicator next to the email icon. They can be optionally filtered out of the result set by choosing the "Include longest threads only" filter option (Include only longest thread). |
